Remembering Lee Hernly
It is with a heavy heart that we share Lee Hernly, Carlyle Council’s board Secretary, has passed away. Lee has served on the Carlyle Council since 2011. He was a member of the Grounds Committee where he shared his knowledge of being a Master Gardner with us to always keep Carlyle looking beautiful.
Lee was born on November 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C. Lee was a military veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, stationed in Panama, Korea, and Japan.
Lee was most widely known as a pioneer in online media in Alexandria, launching a Carlyle/Eisenhower East neighborhood blog in 2006. The blog eventually grew into the popular local blog Red Brick Town, which eventually became Port City Wire.
Through his time in Carlyle he has seen many of the buildings go up and always loved to share his history knowledge.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ann Southard Murphy, and their son Samuel Southard Hernly. He is also survived by two daughters from his first marriage to Corrinda Duncan, Carolina H. Taylor and Katherine A. Hernly, and a granddaughter, Alley S. Taylor of all Texas. His mother Dorothy and brother Jay G. Hernly of Alexandria; and brother John F. Hernly, Sr. of Wilmington, N.C. and a sister Katherine H. Hull of Casselberry, FL. also survive.
He will be severely missed by the board and all of those that had the pleasure of knowing Lee.
