Alexandria’s Water Quality and Flooding Projects
There are several ongoing flood mitigation and water quality projects happening in Alexandria. This PDF explains the difference between 3 of the major projects:
Flood Action Alexandria: Flood Action Alexandria is an initiative to address flooding issues that arise in our community. Minimizing flooding is a shared public-private responsibility, and the City is committed to working with its residents and businesses to mitigate the impacts of flooding and build community resiliency.
Waterfront Flood Mitigation: The City of Alexandria, Virginia is embarking on a multi-year capital program to reinvent the City’s Waterfront as a dynamic gateway to historic Old Town. The $60 million program includes development of a flood mitigation system, creation of a riverfront promenade and the new Waterfront Park plaza.
RiverRenew Tunnel Project: The RiverRenew Tunnel System project will remediate four combined sewer overflow outfalls in Alexandria by directing the combined sewage to the AlexRenew Water Resource Recovery facility to be treated before being discharged. The project includes the construction of a 20 million gallon per day tunnel dewatering pumping station and 130 million gallon per day wet weather pumping station. Upon completion, the project will prevent millions of gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater from contaminating Hooffs Run, Hunting Creek, and the Potomac River.
