Developer for Wegmans Project Seeks to Nix Condo Units

Stonebridge Associates is seeking to change the mix of housing units in its Wegmans-anchored project by Eisenhower Metro station in greater Carlyle. The project was approved in 2018 for a mix of condos, rental housing and senior living in three towers above a multi-story space for retail and parking. Retail space includes the highly anticipated 85,000 square foot Wegmans grocery store.

According to the staff report submitted to the Alexandria Planning Commission: “After receiving approval in March 2018 for DSUP#2017-0023, the applicant has indicated that changes in market conditions have altered the feasibility of the project as originally proposed. Among these, the applicant determined that the building formerly known as the “condo building” during project development would be more feasible as a multifamily rental.”

City staff is recommending approval and the request is set for Planning Commission consideration in late June. If changes are approved, the number of residential units will drop from 800 to 721 with slightly reduced retail and parking space as well.
