On Behalf of the Carlyle Club: American Spirit
Nov 1 @ 8:00 pm

Image

Join us for an entertainment experience you will not forget! This band’s new live stage production is premiering in Alexandria, Virginia as the first stop on a planned National tour, and the timing could not be better. American Spirit takes us back to the 1960s and reflects on how five individuals worked to bring our country together in the most trying times. There was intense racial strife and a nuclear showdown. But unlike the politicians media, and celebrities  of today. Those in a positions to make a difference chose to unite rather than to divide. Politicians spoke words of inclusiveness, a spiritual leader suffered incredible indignities but never related the actions of a few to an entire race. The music industry and its performances were writing and singing music to appeal to all. You will hear the incredible powerful words as the were actually spoken by John Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy during the times of national crises. In addition you will be transported back in the time for three live tributes to actual concerts: Motown’s 1963 Motortown revue at the Apollo Theater. Frank Sinatra and Count Basie’s “Concert of the Century” at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in 1966, and to the Fox Theater in Detroit for Motown’s final Motortown revue in 1968. Hear over forty songs that you know and love all performed live in upbeat, fast-paced medleys by our incredibly talented cast of musicians. Your emotions will run the gamut but you will never experience another show where you will be dancing in your seat one minute and bought to tears the next.

On Behalf of the Carlyle Club: Hail Hail Rock n Roll Tribute to Chuck Berry
Nov 17 @ 8:00 pm

The influence of Chuck Berry’s music is incalculable. From rock to hip-hop, country to jazz, Berry’s music provided the foundation for popular music as we know it. From formative hits like Johnny B. Goode and You Never Can Tell, Berry’s music completely altered the musical landscape. Join some of DC’s finest musicians to celebrate the music which gave life to virtually all that came afterward.

Meet the band: Kenny Pirog (vocals, guitar): Pirog spearheads area rock & roll group Wanted Man, introducing elements of blues, surf rock, and rockabilly to the Washington, DC, music scene.

Anthony Pirog (lead guitar): Pirog is making his mark on the guitar-playing universe, one sonically enthralling, diversely influenced project at a time. Pirog challenges our preconceived notions about genre and guitar sound with aplomb.
DARYL DAVIS earned his Bachelor of Music Degree from Howard University in Washington, DC where he was a member of their world famous and renowned Jazz Vocal Ensemble. In addition to being a vocalist, guitarist, and composer, DARYL is a keyboardist extraordinaire. Upon graduation, DARYL went on to work with such artists as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Platters, The Drifters, The Coasters, Bo Diddley, Percy Sledge, and Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave), to name a few.

Elijah Jamal Balbed (saxophone): An alumnus of Howard University’s legendary jazz program, saxophonist, composer, educator, and activist Balbed has been named Artist of the Year (2016), Best Tenor Saxophonist (2013), and Best New Jazz Musician (2010) by the Washington City Paper.

John Previti (bass): During the early 60s, Previti grew up immersed in the region’s bubbling cauldron of musical styles: swing, country, jazz, R&B, soul, and rockabilly, leading to an 18-year stint playing with guitar legend Danny Gatton.
Larry Ferguson (drums): Ferguson is known for his incredible timing and technique behind the drum set. Able to provide a keen sense of rhythm to any variety of musical genre playing, from orchestral to jazz and rock, Ferguson is a first-call drummer.

On Behalf of the Carlyle Club: Brian Lenair’s “The Cover Story” Pre-CD Release Concert
Nov 19 @ 7:00 pm

An evening with National Recording Artist Saxophonist

Don’t miss the super talented Saxophonist  Brian Lenair as he releases his latest CD entitled THE COVER STORY” at The Carlyle Club!  Come and enjoy DC’s own as he performs the music from the CD.  In addition you will get a copy of his new CD included with the admission to the concert.  The CD will be released in January but you will get yours that night.  Spread the word!

National recording artist, Brian Lenair is a Washington D.C. based contemporary Jazz saxophonist that can blow with the best of them. He has lent his talents performing with or behind some of the greatest recording artists and musicians of our time including national recording greats like, Will Downing, Maysa, Jean Carne, Billy Paul, Angela Bofill, Christopher Williams, Miki Howard, Glenn Jones, Al Jarreau, Vesta, Tony Terry, Phyllis Hyman, Pieces of a Dream, Miles Jaye, Grover Washington, Jr., Peabo Bryson, and George Benson, just to name a few. Lenair credits the works of jazz greats Grover Washington, Jr. and Stanley Turrentine as musical inspiration. Lenair’s first band was 4 1/2 Hours. After four years with the group, he joined Spur of the Moment, who has become a legendary Washington, DC jazz/funk band. As the front man of the group, they astounded audiences with their mixture of jazz and R&B sounds for over 15 years. During that time, the group recorded two CDs entitled Spuraddict and Out of the Shadows, which prominently features Lenair’s talent as a musician, producer and composer.

Despite the growing success of Spur of the Moment, Lenair moved forward to pursue a solo career selling more than 500,000 at live performances over a 12 year period. In 2004, Lenair produced his first CD entitled, The Journey. Creating this CD gave Lenair the opportunity to showcase his talents as an extraordinary saxophonist, producer, entertainer, and songwriter. The first single, “Gone Ridin” is a mixture of soft melodies and up-tempo grooves. The title track “The Journey”, Lenair’s personal favorite, expresses the experience that he and his family endured during his sister’s victorious battle with cancer. Another track is one of his all-time favorites, “I Keep Forgetting” (Every Time You Are Near)”, originally recorded by Michael McDonald. In 2006, Lenair resurfaced with his first inspirational gospel project, Inspirations, Volume 1. This jazzy compilation embodies a total music experience. It features traditional gospel songs such as “Near the Cross” and “Amazing Grace” as well as contemporary gospel songs like “Total Praise”, “Stand” and “Center of My Joy”. Lenair’s soulful notes and expressions are a force to be reckoned with.
