A new hops, beats and bites themed event will debut in Carlyle when the 1st Annual Barley & Music Fest takes place on Saturday, September 17th at John Carlyle Square Park.  The new festival will run from noon to 6 p.m., transforming John Carlyle Square Park with craft brews from artisanal breweries, live entertainment, and food vendors. This is a FREE event to attend; however tickets are needed to sample beers. Ticket cost is $15 for 5 drink tickets and will include a custom tasting glass. Attendees, who wish to purchase additional tastes, may purchase them at $1.00 per ticket.

Pure Barre Pop Up at the Park
Carlyle’s Pure Barre Studio is sponsoring a Pure Barre Pop Up class at John Carlyle Square Park on Wednesday, September 21 starting at 5:30.  The class is free and participants just need to bring an exercise mat. Pure Barre is a total body workout that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact. And, the concentration involved while taking Pure Barre allows you to block “life” out during class, creating the mental benefits similarly obtained by the practice of yoga or meditation. A transformed body and a clear head in just one hour—try it out.  Rain date is September 28th.

Fusion Academy Will Open for the School Year in Carlyle
Fusion is an accredited private school for middle and high school for grades 6-12 that started in California in 1989 and has expanded to 39 campuses across the country, including the DMV region. They have leased space at 333 John Carlyle Street that will be ready for move in mid-fall.  Until then, the Academy will use temporary space next door at 1900 Duke Street.

According to its website, the Academy is a community of learning where positive relationships and one-to-one classrooms unlock the academic potential for students to create opportunities for emotional and social growth. In a Fusion one-to-one classroom, the educational experience is customized, classes are self-paced, and course material is presented in ways that suit students’ individual interests, strengths and challenges. Fusion offers over 250 middle and high school courses, all of which meet state standards.   Students complete all schoolwork on-site, instead of at home.  Fusion Academy will add to the mix of child learning centers located in Carlyle, joining Bright Horizons which opened in late 2015.  They are holding an information session on September 14th from 9 – 10:30 am at Society Fair. For details, visit their website at www.fusionacademy.com.

As one of the most active SBA lenders in the region historically, the Bank has already established significant Alexandria clientele. This track record, coupled with a reputation for business banking excellence, serves as a catalyst for continued growth.  Access National Bank is a business bank organized in December 1999 by professional bankers and business people. Their mission is to provide credit, treasury management and private banking services to emerging businesses with revenues of up to $100 million.

Transportation Management Program (TMP) News

Carlyle Excels in Commuting Commitment
Carlyle’s latest commuter survey results reveal that more than two thirds of workers and residents in Carlyle use alternate means of getting to work instead of driving alone in a car.  The City of Alexandria has set targets for its communities to meet in regards to occupants per vehicle and using other modes of transportation. The findings in the latest Carlyle survey far exceed the City’s projected targets.  Congratulations to everyone in Carlyle who commutes to work whether by walking, biking, ridesharing, vanpooling, train, metro or bus.

Re-think Parking Spaces
PARK(ing) Day is a global event aimed at reclaiming parking spaces by temporarily transforming them into exciting and imaginative park spaces or parklets. Local businesses, non-profits, and City Departments can all design and host their own temporary park. The idea for PARK(ing) Day originally started in San Francisco in 2005. An art and design studio, created a temporary park to draw attention to the lack of open space and need for more space for pedestrians. The PARK(ing) Day movement has since grown throughout the world to more than 160 different cities. It is always held on the third Friday in September. This year the date is September 16, 2016. For more information, pictures and the permit application to reserve your organization’s PARK, please visit https://www.alexandriava.gov/93400.

Safe Track Surge #8 Impacts Alexandria
Surge No. 8, which requires 16 days of continuous single-tracking between Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations on the Yellow and Blue lines, will continue through Sept. 11. Metro officials also added three consecutive weekend shutdowns to the surge so that crews can rehabilitate a switch in the area. The changes are part of a revised SafeTrack plan. Officials said the revised schedule is needed for aggressive work to be performed on interlockings — the points where trains change tracks — and the infrastructure faulted in the recent derailment at East Falls Church.  To that effect, Metro has planned a series of weekend shutdowns on short segments of the line: On September 10 and 11, Metro will operate buses instead of rail service between Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations.
