City Council Considers Extending Parking Meter Hours in Carlyle
Details have emerged since we reported last month that the City’s proposed FY2015 Budget includes extending parking meter enforcement hours in Carlyle. The City Manager’s proposal will extend meter hours from the current 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM weekdays, and will also operate on Saturdays.
Currently, drivers must plug the parking meters in Carlyle from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking is free for street spaces on Saturday and Sunday. The proposed extension must be approved by City Council during consideration of the City Budget for its next fiscal year.
At their Tuesday April 8, 2014 legislative meeting, City Council continued discussions on items that will impact next year’s City budget. The Council asked questions about the City Manager’s proposal to extend parking meter hours in Old Town and Carlyle. The extension proposal is based on a recommendation from the Old Town Area Parking Study Work Group, a City Manager appointed stakeholder group, which was established to discuss key findings and recommendations from the Old Town Area Parking Study and to advise staff. The recommendation to extend hours stated:
“Extend on-street parking meter hours of operation into the evening. In the evenings, the free on-street parking is more attractive than paying for off-street parking. Extending the meter hours will improve off-street parking utilization. This modification also has the potential to reduce the attractiveness of curb parking in high demand areas for employees and business owners.”
If you are interested in providing your input on these proposed changes, City Council will hold their monthly public hearing Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 9:30 AM, where the public is invited to provide input on the proposed tax rates and budget proposal.
